Metal Evolution presents 11 episodes based on the ground-breaking “Heavy Metal Family Tree”. This 26 sub-genre genealogical chart reveals the vast complex progeny of heavy metal – from Early Metal and Shock Rock to Thrash, from Progressive Metal to Grunge and Nu Metal. Using the Chart as his road map, host/producer and metalhead turned anthropologist Sam Dunn, crisscrossed the globe exploring the vast history of heavy metal across its 40+ year history and beyond. From bars and back alleys to the biggest open air festivals, Sam will visit the pioneers of British and American hard rock who laid metal’s sonic foundation, as well as the current leaders of contemporary metal. Whether you love metal, documentaries or just great stories, Metal Evolution is the ultimate examination into the history of Heavy Metal music.
Drawing on the expertise of a whole team of musicians, journalists, academics, and producers, Sam will explore the questions heavy metal fans have always wanted to ask. A highlight of the series will be Sam’s in-depth discussions with many of heavy metal’s most important and influential personalities. From Alice Cooper to Slash, Lemmy to Rob Zombie and members of Metallica, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Slayer, Van Halen, Def Leppard, The Stooges, ZZ Top, Motley Crue, Poison, Rage Against The Machine, Alice In Chains, Korn, and many more, Sam will investigate the history, myths and intricacies of Metal.

Sorry about the radio silence recently. HQ has been ‘hellbent for leather’ pounding through some intense footage spanning Maiden, Motorhead, Rush and then on top of that completing the Episodes for Metal Evolution!! I’ll try to summarize what’s going on (I may have to waterboard some unsuspecting Banger Films producer in order to gather the intel).
For the moment please feast on a small sample of the Rush Time Machine Tour live production that will be released on November 8.
Now check if it’s showing in your town!! Let us know!
VH1 broke the news on the much anticipated Metal Evolution TV series earlier this month. The series will launch onto the small screen on November 11, 2011 at 10pm ET/PT following 11 Days of Metal related videos on VH1 Classic leading up to the premiere of Metal Evolution.
Here is a sample of the press release:
VH1 Classic proclaims 11-11-11 as “National Metal Day,” a day-long celebration of all things metal. The metal bonanza begins November 1, 2011 with metal-focused concerts, specials, movies and videos each night leading up to grand finale on 11-11-11. On “National Metal Day” catch the highly anticipated premiere of Banger Films’ groundbreaking documentary series, “Metal Evolution” at 10 PM ET/PT.
“Metal Evolution” is an 11-episode docu-series produced by Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn of Banger Films and is based on the groundbreaking “Heavy Metal Family Tree.” The “Heavy Metal Family Tree” is a 26 sub-genre genealogical chart which reveals the vast complex progeny of heavy metal – from Early Metal and Shock Rock to Thrash, from Progressive Metal to Grunge and Nu Metal. Using the chart as his road map, host/producer and metalhead turned anthropologist Dunn, crisscrosses the globe exploring the vast history of heavy metal across its 40+ year history and beyond. Fantastic news from Banger Films HQ in Toronto. The much anticipated documentary mini series Metal Evolution has been extended by 3 episodes after some very positive early reception. This brings the total series to 11 episodes which I’m sure will stretch into more as they begin to screen later next year. Along the current batch of genres getting a closer look will be episodes covering Early Metal US (Come on DEATH/MASSACRE!!), Early Metal UK and Progressive Metal.
Vh1 Classic picked up the documentary series following the success of the Iron Maiden and Rush documentary’s which established Banger Films as the goto group for high quality, engaging and uniquely positioned Heavy Metal film making.
There is very little press making it’s way to our pages but this should change as we flip to the new year and we start hearing more of the post production efforts of the editing team. Sam, Scot, Martin and the entire travelling film crew have been scouring the globe capturing new footage for the series. It is like pulling teeth trying to extract any juicy details from the crew so hold your breath, this will be epic!! :)
As we know Metal Evolution is a Banger Films mini series which focus’s on the Heavy Metal Family tree which was featured in the documentary Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey and was also included in the Soundtrack Linear notes. Each episode will feature new footage and interviews based on one of these Genre’s. Along with styles such as Early Metal, Glam Metal, Shock Rock, Power Metal and Thrash Metal, three new episodes have been just announced (here) which will cover Early Metal UK, Early Metal US and Progressive Metal.
Honestly I can’t really say. It’s been balls out traveling and interviews for Metal Evolution ever since the Rush release and Traverse City screenings. I’m sure (given the handful of you that might stumble across this post) some of you may have bumped into some of the Banger crew around the globe. It would be great to have some more interaction here. Tell us where you may have been when you caught a glimpse of the ever elusive Mr Dunn, or Mr Mcfadyen. Perhaps you ran into señor Hawkes or Madamme Mauro . A few places where you have have caught wind of the team might have been New York, Toronto, Germany, France, Slovenia, Norway and a shitload of other countries on route. That’s just in the last couple months… It is simply mind numbing how much traveling these guys do and how hard the whole team works.
Okay back to Rush, I don’t give these guys nearly enough props but the folks over at Rush is a Band do remarkable work. Their research and sometimes ‘early news’ is not found anywhere else online.
This funny ‘Rush fan VS Kiss fan‘ post with some hilarious fan quotes drifted through my news filter. Some of us humans are quite emotionally charged about certain music personalities hey..
